چکیده

We examine the the industrial application of formal methods using data gathered in a review of 62 projects taking place over the last 25 years. The review suggests that formal methods are being applied in a wide range of application domains, with increasingly strong tool support. Significant challenges remain in providing usable tools that can be integrated into established development processes; in education and training; in taking formal methods from first use to second use, and in gathering and evidence to support informed selection of methods and

Layout Design of a Furniture Production Line Using Formal Methods

This paper experiments application of different heuristic approaches to a real facility layout problem at a furniture manufacturing company. All the models are compared using AHP, where a number of parameters of interest are employed. The experiment shows that formal layout modelling approaches can be effectively used real problems faced in industry, leading to significant improvements.

Industrial Application of Formal Models Generated from Domain Specific Languages

Domain Specific Languages (DSLs) provide a lightweight approach to incorporate formal techniques into the industrial workflow. From DSL instances, formal models and other artefacts can be generated, such as simulation models and code. Having a single source for all artefacts improves maintenance and offers a high return on investment of the initial modelling effort. Since DSLs can be used to ca...

SOFL: A Formal Engineering Methodology for Industrial Applications

Formal methods have yet to achieve wide industrial acceptance for several reasons. They are not well integrated into established industrial software processes, their application requires significant abstraction and mathematical skills, and existing tools do not satisfactorily support the entire formal software development process. We have proposed a language called SOFL (Structured-Object-based...

What Makes Industries Believe in Formal Methods

The introduction of formal methods in the design and development departments of an industrial company has far reaching and long lasting consequences. In fact it changes the whole environment of methods, tools and skills that determine the design culture of that company. A decision to replace current design practice by formal methods, therefore, appears a vital one and is not lightly taken. The ...

Satisfaction Meets Practice and Confidence

The industrial application of formal methods and in particular of software verification tools, e.g. based on satisfiability checking and symbolic computation as being in the main focus of the SC network, necessitates two main requirements. The methods and tools, first, need to actually aim at the problem class that occur in practice and, second, have to guarantee a high level of confidence. In ...
